About
Mhairi Revie
I am a Scottish born visual artist living on Giabal and Jarowair Country (Toowoomba, Australia). My ceramics practice centres on reinforcing and reinterpreting memories of lived experience, places and objects. Whilst I engage in hand-building, throwing is becoming increasingly central to my practice, being well suited to my developing artistic conceptually and nuanced. As an artist with degenerative vision loss, I am interested in how the haptic materiality of clay can disrupt the occularcentrism of visual culture. More specifically, I am interested in how the indexical immediacy of ceramics can be used to create a tactile counter-archive of ableism, thus challenges occularcentric narratives and promoting “other ways of seeing”. I use tactility along with my other senses to guide and visualise my work. I also use a combination of devices/strategies such as video magnifiers, braille dots, and mental-mappingwork.
